Best Season for Corsica

Choosing when to visit Corsica is the first decision that will shape your entire trip. The island enjoys a generous Mediterranean climate with over 2,700 hours of sunshine per year, but conditions vary considerably by season, altitude and coast (east or west). A GR20 trek in June is a fundamentally different experience from the same trail in August, and a boat trip in April feels nothing like one in July. This guide breaks down the weather, crowd levels and available activities month by month to help you pick the perfect timing.

Spring (April - June): the insiders' secret

April: the island awakens

April marks the start of the tourist season in Corsica. The maquis explodes into colour: white and pink cistus, tree heather, wild lavender and asphodels carpet the hills. Temperatures range from 12 to 20 degrees C on the coast, while the mountains remain cool (5-12 degrees C). Snow still covers the peaks above 1,800 m.

It is the ideal month for low and mid-altitude hiking: coastal paths, forest walks, exploring inland villages. Trails are virtually deserted and accommodation is affordable. However, sea swimming is still chilly (16-17 degrees C) and water-based activities are limited. The GR20 remains impassable due to snow on the northern section.

May: the perfect balance

May is one of the most pleasant months in Corsica. Temperatures climb to 18-25 degrees C on the coast. The maquis is at the peak of its bloom, filling the air with an intoxicating fragrance of immortelle, myrtle and rosemary. Days lengthen noticeably with over 14 hours of daylight.

Mid-mountain hikes become accessible. Waterfalls and natural pools are fed by snowmelt and flow at their most spectacular. The sea reaches 18-19 degrees C, enough for the hardy. The first boat trips begin with still-low demand. It is the perfect time to photograph the landscapes in crystalline light, without the heat haze of summer.

June: the golden month

June is widely considered the best month to visit Corsica. Temperatures reach 22-28 degrees C, the sea warms to 20-22 degrees C and sunshine is at its peak. High mountain terrain sheds its snow: the GR20 becomes fully hikeable, refuges open and passes clear.

Every activity is available: hiking at all levels, canyoning, via ferrata, boat trips, diving, kayaking. Visitor numbers build gradually but remain well below July-August levels. Prices are still reasonable, especially in the first half of the month. It is the ideal time for those who want to do everything without the summer crush.

Summer (July - August): peak season

July: heat and crowds

July marks the start of high season. Temperatures regularly exceed 30 degrees C on the coast and reach 25-28 degrees C in the mountains. The sea is warm (23-25 degrees C), days are long and luminous. It is the most popular month with families and holidaymakers.

The downside: crowds are considerable at popular sites. Beaches are packed, the best-known trails see streams of hikers and accommodation books out months in advance. Prices hit their peak. For hikes, set off at dawn to beat the heat and the crowds. Favour lesser-known routes and high-altitude trails.

August: Corsica at full throttle

August extends July's conditions with even higher temperatures (sometimes 35-38 degrees C on the coast) and maximum visitor numbers, especially around mid-August. Lower-altitude rivers can partially dry up, reducing the appeal of some natural pools. Fire risk is at its highest: access to certain massifs may be banned by prefectoral order.

Despite these constraints, August remains an outstanding month for marine activities: boat trips, scuba diving, snorkeling in 26-degree waters. In the mountains, afternoon thunderstorms are frequent but generally short-lived. The GR20 is very busy: book your refuges several months ahead.

Autumn (September - October): the magical shoulder season

September: the best of both worlds

September is the favourite month of those in the know. The summer crowds melt away after the first week, temperatures drop to a pleasant 24-28 degrees C and the sea retains its summer warmth (23-24 degrees C). Days remain long with 12 hours of daylight, and the low-angle light of autumn will elevate your photographs.

It is the perfect month for the GR20 (fewer walkers, ideal mountain temperatures), maquis hikes, canyoning and all water-based activities. Prices drop significantly from August. Accommodation is more available and activity providers are more relaxed. The only caveat: some refuges close toward the end of the month.

October: mildness and serenity

October still delivers fine sunny days with temperatures of 18-24 degrees C. The sea remains pleasant for swimming (20-22 degrees C). It is the month of grape harvests, food festivals and village fetes. Chestnut and beech forests take on golden and russet tones, offering sumptuous autumn scenery in the Castagniccia and the interior valleys.

Low and mid-altitude hiking is still excellent. Higher up, conditions become less predictable: the first snows may dust the peaks and days grow shorter. Some activity providers wind down operations by mid-October. It is the ideal time for an authentic Corsica, off the beaten track.

Winter (November - March): secret Corsica

Winter in Corsica is often overlooked, yet the island never closes. The coast enjoys mild temperatures (10-15 degrees C) and more sunshine than most of mainland France. Rain is more frequent, especially in November and December, but clear spells are plentiful.

The mountains are transformed: heavy snow above 1,200 m, thundering waterfalls, torrents swollen by rain. The small ski stations of Vergio, Ghisoni and Ese open their runs when snow allows. It is also citrus season: Corsican clementines, lemons and oranges fill the markets. Guest houses and restaurants that remain open offer very attractive rates.

For hikers, winter is reserved for coastal trails and low-altitude walks. Mountain paths are snow-bound and potentially dangerous without winter gear (crampons, snowshoes, ice axe).

Summary table by activity

Canyoning June - September May, October (cold water)
Sea swimming June - October May (cool water, 18-19 degrees C)
Boat trips April - October March, November (unpredictable)
Diving May - October April (variable visibility)
Via ferrata April - November Winter (rain, cold)

Tips for making the most of your chosen period

Whatever season you pick, a few strategies will help you maximise your stay. In high season (July-August), book accommodation, ferries and activities at least three months in advance. Start hikes early (6-7am) to beat the heat and enjoy the trails before the crowds.

In the shoulder season (May-June, September-October), flexibility is your ally. Bookings are easier and prices lower. Keep a spare day in your programme to adapt to the weather: a rainy day in the mountains can turn into a glorious day on the sheltered east coast.

In the off season (November-March), check that accommodation and restaurants are open before you travel. Many close from November to Easter. Mountain roads may be cut by snow: check road conditions before heading for any pass. On the other hand, it is paradise for photographers and lovers of solitude.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to hike in Corsica?
The best hiking period is June to September. June and September offer ideal conditions with pleasant temperatures (20-28 degrees C) and moderate crowds. For the GR20, aim for June or September: passes are clear, refuges are open and the trails are less crowded than in high summer.
Can you swim in Corsica in May or October?
In May, sea temperature ranges from 17-19 degrees C: swimming is possible but bracing. Rivers and mountain pools are still cold at altitude. In October, the sea retains heat accumulated over summer and still reaches 20-22 degrees C, making it very pleasant for swimming. It is one of the best months for combining hiking and bathing.
Is it too hot in Corsica in July-August?
On the coast, temperatures regularly exceed 30 degrees C in July-August, making low-altitude hikes gruelling. In the mountains (above 1,000 m), temperatures stay pleasant at 20-25 degrees C. The solution: start early for coastal trails and save altitude hikes for the afternoon.
When are prices lowest in Corsica?
Rates are most attractive from October to April (excluding Christmas holidays). April-May and September-October offer the best value: pleasant weather, quieter sites and accommodation 30-50% cheaper than July-August. Ferries and flights are also more affordable outside peak season.
Does it snow in Corsica?
Yes, the Corsican summits are snow-covered from November to May. Monte Cinto (2,706 m) can retain snow patches into June. In winter, modest ski stations operate at Ghisoni and Vergio. Snow can block certain mountain passes (Bavella, Vergio) between December and March. However, the coast remains mild with winter temperatures of 8-15 degrees C.
